Originally large format instrument, greatly reduced.
The cello was part of a group of 26 instruments built for the French royal house, consisting of violins, violas and cellos.
This decorated instrument was made by Amati on commission of King Charles IX of France.
The bands bear the wording of the motto “PIETATE ET IUSTITIA” and are pictured together with the royal family crest on the bottom of the instrument.
